The P mint made 9,714,000 Franklin half dollars in 1962. Larger numbers were made, and most are in circulation and can easily be found. The coins made at P mint became poor quality due to larger circulation. The worn-out coins come with full bell lines FBL. In gem condition, some FBL coins exist.

The History of the 1962 Half Dollar

The 1962 half dollars are part of the Franklin coins series made from 1948 and 1963. The US Mint Director Nellie Tayloe Ross was a follower of Franklin so he wanted to add a photo of the president on coins.

In 1947 Ross asked designer John r. Sinnock to make designs that mint used to make Franklin half dollars. So Sinnock started to make designs according to sculptures made recently but the designer died before completion of the design. So  Gilroy Roberts completed the designs.

The commission not unlike the original design has had a small eagle out of place and a crack existing on the Liberty Bell on the backside.

Irrespective of criticism mint goes for Sinnock’s designs. The initials of designer JRS also added on the coin’s front side. That decision causes controversy. The mint made half dollars until 1963 after that Kenndey half dollars were made following the assassination of John Fitzgerald Kennedy.
