1996 Quarter History

The Washington Quarters are important in US coin history and they were made in 1932 first time to celebrate the birthday of the Washington president.  Washington quarters were made from 1932 to 1998 and each type has a high number of mintage.

These coins made as a replacement for standing liberty in 1932. Their design was firstly used in 1974 and that changed for quarters made from 1977 to 1998. The design of quarters coins in 1975 and 1976 came with an eagle on the back side as a temporary design. This design was made to honor the bicentennial of the Declaration of Independence.

The design on Washington Quarters was made by John F. Flanagan, in 1932 and comes with a photo of the president facing left on the front side. The composition of quarters is 90 percent silver used until 1964.  So silver prices increased causing to change in compositions.  The 1996 quarters were made by all mints Denver, Philadelphia, and San Francisco Mints.

The front side of the 1996 quarters comes with George Washington’s photo facing left, the motion IN GOD WE TRUST also written. The mint mark is also on this side.  The minting date is also there and the JF initials of the designer are on this side.

The MS66 grade coins are easy to get and a larger number of coins exists. MS67 is difficult to find but they can get it. Since a larger number of coins were made for this grade.

1996-D Quarter Value

More than 900 million in 1996 D Washington Quarter was made by D Mint. They are common coins due to larger mintage. MS67 grade coins are about 20 dollars and they are in circulation. Older MS67-grade coins have thousands of dollars.

MS66 grade is 15 dollars and MS68 grade coins are about 200 dollars and in 2013 MS68 1996 D quarters sold for $447.
