History of the 1900 Indian Head Penny

The Indian head pennies were first made in 1859, and their mintage was used until 1909 and replaced with Lincoln wheat pennies. The new pennies were replaced for celebrating the 100th birthday of President Lincoln.

As the 1909 wheat pennies first time comes with a photo of a real person, and Indian pennies do not have such portraits but come with an imaginary Lady Liberty wearing a headdress.

The design of Indian head pennies was made by Mint chief engraver James Barton Longacre. The main idea was for showing the lady liberty but not affecting the name of the coin that is still Indian head pennies.

The Indian head pennies made from 1859 to 1865 have a composition of 88 percent copper and the remaining nickel. The Philadelphia mint used a composition of 95 percent copper-tin alloy in 1864 that was changed in composition after 50 years.
