History Of 1904 Indian Head Penny
The US Mint made indian pennies from 1859 to 1909 which were designed and made by Chief Engraver and designer James Barton Longacre. Many speculations came around for a girl photo on the front side of the coin. It was a photo of an Indian princess, but many rumors came around that putting she is own daughter’s photo on coins. However, the designer denied that this idea came from the ancient Greek statue.
The headdress was part of certain tribal features since the designer was paying tribute to all Native American warriors. At that time for coin design, there was no competition only mint designers made designs of coins. The designer’s initials were added on pennies in 1964 when used as legal coins.
