1920 Buffalo Nickel History

The buffalo nickel was made as a replacement for the Liberty Head nickel that was made from 1883 to 1913. Liberty nickel coins are also called V nickels because the front side of the coins comes with a Roman V number, which is 5. The Liberty nickel was changed in series made from 1907 to 1911 for US coinages. The nickel is the 6th coin in this series.

The main reason for changing the design was President Theodore Roosevelt. Since 1908, which is 25 years, coin design has not varied without congressional authorization. The design of the coins was made by Mint Chief Engraver Charles E. Barber, and he made coins with a photo of President George Washington.

It was thought that these coins were circulated and called Washington nickels. But released since Leach left working in mint, and Abrew Andrew started work that was not liked in the previous design. So the new design made by Frasers for nickel use comes with a Native American warrior on the front side and a USA buffalo on the back side.

The starting Buffalo nickels come with a denomination on the raising part of dirt below the buffalo on the coin reverse. That causes denomination removal. To solve it, James Earl Frasers changed the design in mid-1913 by removing dirt and using a denomination below it. The 1920 Buffalo nickels come with this same design, and these Buffalo nickels were made until 1938 and then replaced with Jefferson nickels.
