History of the 1992 Penny
The Lincoln pennies were first made in 1909 to celebrate the 16th USA president’s birthday anniversary. The penny called wheat penny has two wheat stalks on the backside. The design of wheat pennies was made by Victor David Brenner, and before releasing, there were many changes made in coins. These wheat pennies were used until 1959 for 50 years, and then new pennies were made with the back side Lincoln Memorial that were called Lincoln Memorial pennies. The Lincoln Memorial pennies were used for 2008 and then replaced with Union shields.
The 1992 is also Lincoln memorial pennies, and the design of Lincoln memorial pennies was made by sculptor Frank Gasparro that added Lincoln Memorial on the back side of coins with replacing wheat stalks. Not only did the design change for pennies, but also their composition changed. At start pennies were made with a 95 percent copper and zinc tin alloy. But with time, copper content reduces due to the high value of copper.
Before the 1980s, the zinc core and copper cladding were used for the penny’s composition. The 1992 Lincoln pennies are made with a copper-copper-clad composition.
