History of the 1960 Penny
The Lincoln penny was first made in 1909 to celebrate the birthday of the 16th USA president’s birth anniversary. These pennies were first called wheat pennies since they have two wheat stalks on the backside that were used until the 150th birth anniversary and replaced with the Lincoln Memorial.
The design of these coins was made by Brenner on the front side and the reverse side was made by engraver Frank Gasparro in 1959 through replacing the wheat pennies.
The 1960 is the 2nd year when Lincoln pennies were made having the Lincoln Memorial on the back side. There were about more than 2 billion pennies made by Philadelphia and Denver. Lincoln memorial pennies were used for 50 years and then replaced with the Union shield in 2009 to celebrate the bicentenary of Lincoln’s birth.
